14 "There were emotional scenes in Thokoza on Saturday at the unveiling of a monument to those who died in a wave of political violence that swept the East Rand prior to the 1994 democratic general election. Friends and relatives wept openly as President Thabo Mbeki and IFP president Mangosuthu Buthelezi joined together to unveil the monument, a large granite slab inscribed with the names of 688 people who died in the violence. Earlier the President and Mr. Buthelezi cut a ribbon to officially open Buthelezi Sreet – the former Khumalo Street – symbolizing the coming together of the divided communities in the area.
