This resource is hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, but was compiled and authored by Padraig O’Malley. It is the product of almost two decades of research and includes analyses, chronologies, historical documents, and interviews from the apartheid and post-apartheid eras.

Income

Per capita monthly income at 1990 prices was blacks R160; coloureds R270; Asians R470 whites R1 300 (Department of National Health). 1991 census information on earners who specified their incomes shows 38.6% of whites and 40% of Asians earned between R10 000 and R29 999 compared with 24.5% of coloureds and 18.5% of blacks in this category. Most coloureds (28.4%) and most blacks (32.8%) fell in the income group RI 000-R2 999 per annum. The following information is drawn from the 1991 population census:
