Meiring matriculated at Paul Roos Gymnasium, Stellenbosch in 1952 and subsequently graduated with a BComm (1955) and LLB (1957) at Stellenbosch University.

His business career was as follows:

Ø. Trust Bank (legal adviser) 1958 - 1960

Ø. KWV (secretary) 1960 - 1966

Ø. SASKO (General Manager) 1966 - 1981

Ø. Directorships: Boland Bank, SA Perm.

Political career:

Ø. Paarl Town Council 1972 - 1974

Ø. Cape Provincial Council 1974 -1981

Ø. Parliament 1981 - 1989

Ø. Deputy Mininister Foreign Affairs 1986 - 1989

Ø. Administrator Cape Prov 1989 - 1994

Ø. Minister Western Cape 1994 - 1999 (Finance, Environmental Affairs, Planning, etc.)

He married Bettie Vivier in 1959 and has three children and nine grandchildren.

Today he is retired and lives in Sea Point.
