Motlanthe, Kgalema

Motlanthe was born in July 1949.

He is currently the Secretary General of the ANC, a position he took over from Cyril Ramaphosa in 1997.

Motlanthe was an active member of the ANC's political and military structures while the organisation was banned. In 1976 he was sent to Robben Island after being found guilty of terrorism. After his release from prison in 1987, he joined the National Union of Mineworkers as an education officer, eventually becoming general secretary.

Motlanthe was the first chair of the ANC Gauteng region after its unbanning in 1990. He also served on the ANC National Executive Committee.
