Wagener, Johannes Hendrik (Jan)

Jan Wagener obtained his BCOMM(Law) at Stellenbosch University in 1974 and his LLB in 1976.

He worked for the Department of Justice from 1977 until 1995 as State Prosecutor, Assistant State Attorney and Deputy State Attorney. From 1995 until 1996 he was personal consultant to Deputy President F W de Klerk.

In 1996 he became a partner in the firm of Wagener Muller in Pretoria.

In the early 1990s he became the first national chairman of the Legal Personnel Branch of the Public Servants Association and was actively involved in the study of the S A Law Commission into fundamental rights, which may be seen as a forerunner of the present human rights as entrenched in the Constitution of South Africa.

As State Attorney he was involved in the process that led to the creation of the Truth & Reconciliation Commission, including the process of amnesty.
