Xego, Mike

Mike Xego was involved in youth politics in 1974. He belonged to the Student Christian Movement (SCM). In 1975 he joined the Black Consciousness Movement and in 1976 he was one of those who were pioneering student protests against Bantu education.

He was arrested on 20th September 1976, tried at the Supreme Court of Grahamstown by Justice Bruwer and sentenced to five years on Robben Island. He became an ANC supporter while he was on Robben Island. He was released on 20th January 1982.

He then returned to youth politics and helped form the Port Elizabeth Youth Congress until it became a branch of the SA Youth Congress.
