Biko, Steve

1946 - 1977

Biko was a political activist and one of the earliest proponents of the Black Consciousness Movement. He was a founder of the South African Students Organisation (SASO) and was elected as its first President in 1969. He was arrested in 1976, subjected to brutal head injuries and was the 20th person to die in detention.
