Lekota, Mosioua (Patrick)

1948 -

Lekota was active in student politics and was appointed as Permanent Organiser for SASO from 1974 to 1975. He was then imprisoned on Robben Island from 1974 to 1982 for conspiring to commit acts endangering the maintenance of law and order.

After the formation of the UDF in 1983 he was elected Publicity Secretary. He was detained and sentenced at the Delmas Trial in 1985, but was released after the appeal court had reviewed the sentence. He became Convenor of the ANC in Southern Natal in 1990 and was elected to the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) and its National Working Committee (NWC). He served as Chief of Intelligence in 1991 and Secretary for ANC Election Commission the following year.

He was Free State provincial Premier from 1994 to 1996 and Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces from 1997 to 1999. He is currently National Chairperson of the ANC, a position he has held since December 1997.
