Modise, Joe

1923 - 2001

Joe Modise joined the ANCYL in 1947. He was an organiser against the Sophiatown removals in 1954, and was one of the accused in the Treason Trial of 1956. He was a founding member of MK and left South Africa in 1963 to receive training in the USSR and Eastern Europe. He was involved in the multi-party negotiations from 1990 to 1994, particularly with regard to the integration of the armed forces. He was appointed Minister of Defence in 1994.
