Mufamadi, Sydney

1959 -

In 1982 Mufamadi was elected General Secretary of the General & Allied Workers Union. He was Publicity Secretary in the then Transvaal for the United Democratic Front (UDF). He helped organise the launch of COSATU in 1985 and was elected Assistant General Secretary of COSATU in December 1985. He was named as one of the SACP's 22-person Interim Leadership Group on 29 July 1990. He also represented the ANC at CODESA on Working Group 4 and was a member of the National Peace Committee that played an important role in the drafting of the National Peace Accord of 14 September 1991. He represented the ANC at the Transitional Executive Council's sub-council on Law and Order, Safety and Stability from 1993 to 1994. In 1994 he was appointed Minister of Safety and Security, and in 1999 as Minister of Provincial & Local Government. Mufamadi is a serving member of the National Executive Committee and the National Working Committee of the ANC.
