Mvelase, Catherine

She was an activist of the post-Soweto generation, who had been involved in the grass-roots struggle in Alexandra. She left the country in 1976 and received military training overseas. Mvelase, very committed to the cause, was one of a group of about 15-20 Vula operatives who under Mac Maharaj, entered South Africa by crossing the Swaziland border in the 1980s to establish underground networks. She was subsequently imprisoned and subjected to extreme torture by the Security Police.
