Nzo, Alfred

1925 - 2000

Nzo graduated from Fort Hare University. He was one of the organisers of the Defiance Campaign in the 1950s and in 1958 was elected to the Regional and National Executive Committees of the ANC. After the banning of the ANC he left South Africa in 1964 and represented the ANC in many African countries. In 1969 at the Morogoro Conference he was elected Secretary General of the ANC, a position he held until 1991. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Mandela government from 1994 to1999.
