Viljoen, Constand

1933 -

Viljoen was born in Standerton, Mpumalanga Province. He joined the army in 1954 and obtained a B.Sc (B.Mil) degree from the University of Pretoria in 1955. He became Chief of the South African army in 1977, and Chief of the South African Defence Force in 1980. In 1985 he retired.

In the early 1990s he came out of retirement and together with other Generals formed the Afrikaner Volksfront, and subsequent to that, the Freedom Front political party, which he led in parliament until 2001.
