1865. Natal Exemption Law

This "laid down that Africans desiring to be released from native law had to produce proof of literacy and take an oath of allegiance, whereupon the Lieutenant-Governor could admit them some of the privileges of citizenship at discretion" (Davenport 1987: 115).
