1914. Riotous Assemblies & Criminal Law Amendment Act No 27

According to Simons & Simons (1969: 430), this amendment aimed to "curb rebellious white workers". It allowed "the Government ... to establish a special criminal court, comprising two or three judges of the Supreme Court sitting without a jury, to try a person charged with treason, sedition, or public violence" (Dugard 1978: 231). "The sentencing power of the court was fixed by the INDEMNITY & SPECIAL TRIBUNALS ACT 11 of 1915" (Dugard 1978: 229, note 74).
