1940. War Measures Act No 13

This gave the authorities "the power to intern suspects and enemy aliens... including powers to control supplies and curb industrial rest" (Davenport 1987: 330). This act also "made it possible for volunteers to offer their services anywhere in Africa [see the DEFENCE ACT of 1912]. Only white troops, however, were permitted to join combat units, the Coloured and African soldiers being confined to auxiliary services" (Davenport 1987: 330).
