1957. Flag Amendment Act

This "established the Union flag as the only national flag of South Africa" (Riley 1991: 56). See the UNION NATIONALITY & FLAG ACT of 1927.

Though not part of this act, the Prime Minister also announced that Die Stem van suid Afrika "will in future be the country's only national anthem and will be played on all official occasions, including those at which the Queen or her representative, the governor general, is present" (Riley 1991: 56). Since 1938, God Save the Queen had been given equal status.
