1961. Republic of South Africa Constitution Act No 32

This declared the former Union of South Africa a Republic. Somewhat later, the newly founded Republic also left the Commonwealth. "It was largely based on the 1909 [UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA] ACT but substituted the word 'State' whenever 'King', 'Queen' or 'Crown' appeared" (Riley 1991: 72). See also Davenport (1987: 398f) and Barber & Barratt (1990: 66ff).
