Kriegler, Johannes Christiaan (Johann)

Johann Kriegler was born on 29 November 1932. He was educated at King Edward VII High School in Johannesburg and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Pretoria University and a LLB from the University of South Africa.

From 1959 to 1984 he served as an advocate in the Witwatersrand Local Division of Justice, and from 1984 to 1993 he then served in the Transvaal Provincial Division. He was appointed an appellate judge in Bloemfontein from 1993 to 1994 and then with the lead-up to the 1994 first democratic elections in South Africa, had the very responsible position of serving as a Commissioner on the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC). From 1997 to 1999 he assumed the role of Chair of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

He served as a Judge in the Constitutional Court of South Africa in Johannesburg but is now retired.
