Liebenberg, Christo Ferro (Chris)

Liebenberg was born on 2 October 1934 in Touwsriver in the Cape Province and attended school at Worcester Boys High School. He qualified with a CAIB (SA), AMP (Harvard), AMP (Insead), and PMD (Cranfield).

He joined Nedbank in Cape Town in 1952, and served as the company's managing director from 1988 to 1990. Liebenberg was subsequently appointed Chief Executive Officer at Nedcor from 1990 to 1994.

After the shock resignation of Derek Keys, Liebenberg served as Minister of Finance in the government of national unity from 1994 to 1996 on the understanding that he would not be involved in party politics.

He has held the following positions: chairman, Credit Guarantee Insurance Corporation; director, Nedcor; director, Mutual and Federal Insurance Company; director, Oceana Fishing Group; member, Policy Board for Financial Services and Regulation: member, Council University of Stellenbosch School of Business; chairman, Salvation Army National Advisory Board. In 2003 he retired from his position as Chairman of Nedcor.
