Terreblanche, Sampie

Professor Terreblanche was educated at the University of Stellenbosch and Harvard University, He has spent most of his academic career at the former university, becoming Professor of Economics in 1968, and Emeritus Professor of Economics in 1996. From 1972 – 1987 he served on the board of the South African Broadcasting Corporation, for the last five years as vice-chair.

From 1973 – 1976 he was a member of the Theron commission of inquiry into matters concerning the coloured community. From 1979 – 1985 he served as a member of the economic advisory board of the Prime Minister (and State President). In the late 1980's Professor Terreblanche was among the Afrikaner academics who held numerous clandestine meetings in Britain with Thabo Mbeki and other ANC leaders to discuss a transition to democracy in South Africa.

In 1989 – 1990 he was a founding member of and economic adviser to the Democratic Party (DP), but is no longer active in party politics.

He has published eight books, mainly on economic history, the history of economic thought, and South African economic policy issues. He has also contributed to numerous scholarly journals and books, and written extensively for local and international newspapers, mainly on the political situation in South and southern Africa.

He is married, and has five children.
