United Workers' Union Of South Africa (UWUSA)

Uwusa was formed in Durban on 1 May 1986 and has the highest profile of all independent trade unions. Its members are mainly Zulus. Uwusa was formed by Mangosuthu Buthelezi in direct reaction to the formation of Cosatu and the political stance it adopted. Uwusa has the same conservative views as Inkatha, rejecting the sanctions campaign against South Africa. It allegedly has 150 000 members. The general secretary is D Dludla and the president is A B Mlshali.
