Selebi, Jackie

Selebi was born on 7th March 1950.

He is currently the National Commissioner of Police.

During his career Selebi has been a schoolteacher in Soweto and at the Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College (Somafco) in Tanzania. He was leader of the ANC youth section before the Youth League was relaunched after the unbanning of political organisations in 1990.

He served in the diplomatic corps as the foreign affairs director-general (from 1998-2000). He was also South Africa's representative to the UNHRC in Geneva and became the first South African to be elected chairperson of that body.

In 2002 Selebi was elected vice-president of Interpol.
