Professor de Lange was born in Fort Beaufort, South Africa, on 27 Feb 1926. He was educated at Aberdeen High School and Gill College, Somerset East. His qualifications include : BA (Law) (Pta), BA (Unisa), BEd (Pta), MEd (RAU), Dipl TED, THED.

During his career he was chairman of: HSRC Board 1988-1995; the Broederbond 1984-1994; Council for Population Development 1987-1993; HSRC Main Committee for Research into Education in the Republic of South Africa 1982-1992, and Vista University 1982-1990. He was Rector of Rand Afrikaans University from 1979-1987; Vice Rector Academic 1975-1977; Professor 1970-1975; Rector College of Education, Potchefstroom in 1969; Vice-Rector Goudstad College of Education 1967-1968; Researcher, Education Bureau, TED (Transvaal Education Department) 1966-1969; Lecturer, College of Education, Potchefstroom 1961-1966. In 1990 he was appointed to the chair of the Advisory Council for Universities and Technikons; in 1982 he became a Patron of the Free Market Foundation; in 1993 he became a director of Nasionale Pers and, in 1996, of Timken SA .

De Lange has received the following awards during his career: Gold Cross of Saint Mark (1st degree) from Nikolaos VI, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Alexandria, Egypt 1983; Community Relations Award from The Claude Harris Leon Foundation 1984; Commemorative Medal from Die SA Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns 1984, SA Soc for the Advancement of Education 1985; Communication & Leadership Award from Toast Masters 1986; Order for Distinguished Service, Class 1 (Gold) 1987; DEd (hc) from RAU 1987; DEd (hc) from Univ Potch 1988; DEd (hc) from Vista University 1989.

He has published many articles and reports on education in South Africa. He is a life member of the Transvaal Teachers Association, a trustee of the SA Foundation from 1979-1996, and of the Urban Foundation Education Trust from 1982-1996. He is a member of the Advisory Council for Chancery of Orders 1988-1996, a member of the Scientific Advisory Council from 1980-1985 and of the National Regional Development Council 1987-1993.
