Delport, Jacobus Tertius

Delport was born in October 1939 in Humansdorp. His qualifications are BA LLB (Stellenbosch) LLD (UPE). He is married with three children and five grandchildren.

At university he was: Chair of the Students Representative Council; Primarius Dagbreek Men's Residence; National Vice-President President Afrikaanse Studentebond; Chair, Intervarsity Committee; Chair, Choir Festival Committee; and obtained University Full Colours.

Delport is a member of the Dutch Reformed Church, Deacon and Elder.

His career has been as follows: -

State Advocate (1963-4); Advocate and Attorney (1965-8); Senior Lecturer in Law UPE (1969-74); Professor of Law UPE (1975-1987) and Dean of Law Faculty (1976-87); Member of Parliament 87-1994); Deputy Minister of Provincial Affairs and Constitutional Development (1990-92); Minister of Local Government (1992-4); Member of Eastern Cape Legislature (1994-1998); MEC for Agriculture and Transport (1994-1997); Member of Parliament (1999-present).

He previously held the following positions:

Member of the South African Law Commission (1980-87); Member of the National Housing Commission (1975-87); Member of the Commission for the Small Claims Court (1984-87) Member of the Governments Negotiating Team at the Kempton Park Negotiations (1991-1994).

At the present time he holds these positions:

Democratic Alliance Parliamentary Spokesperson for Constitutional Affairs, Member of the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Constitutional Development, Member of the Federal Council of the Democratic Alliance, Chairperson of the Federal Legal Commission of the Democratic Alliance.
