Alliance (Tripartite Alliance)

With the banning of the ANC* and the adoption of the strategy of armed struggle in the 1960s the ANC-in-exile – SACP* cooperation became a close one. This influence was strengthened with SACP presence in the Revolutionary Council set up after the Morogoro conference in 1969. The ANC – SACP alliance was broadened in 1985 (until 1990 through the medium of the UDF*) to include the newly established Congress of South African Trade Unions* (COSATU) in the so-called triple alliance. Despite a strong SACP presence in the ANC's National Committee in the 1980s, the ANC's adherence to socialist ideas became less committed in the 1990s as it entered into negotiations to take over power. The SACP supported ANC candidates in the 1994 election.
