Ramaphosa, Cyril

1952 -

Cyril Ramaphosa obtained his B.Proc degree through UNISA. He joined the Council of Unions of South Africa in 1981 as an advisor in its legal department. In December 1982 he was elected to the first General Secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers, a post he held until 1991 when he became Secretary General of the African National Congress (ANC). He led the ANC negotiation team at CODESA and in the multi-party talks. In May 1994 he became a Member of Parliament and Chairperson of the Constitutional Assembly. In 1997 he moved into the private sector but remains a member of the NEC of the ANC.
