Asmal, Kader

1934 -

Born in Natal, where he qualified as a teacher, Kader Asmal graduated as a lawyer in 1963 at the London School of Economics. He spent the next 25 years in Dublin, lecturing in law and rose to the position of Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Trinity College. He was a founder member of both the British and Irish anti-apartheid movements. He worked for SANROC and was vice-president of IDAF

Asmal has held a number of ANC appointments. He was a MP and was at one time a member of the ANC's National Executive Committee. He was also Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry from 1994 to 1999 and Minister of Education from 1999 to 2004.
