Azanian People'S Organization (AZAPO)

When the Black Consciousness* Movement was banned its principles lived on in AZAPO, formed in 1978. Its goal was a socialist republic of Azania but it did not gain wide support from black workers, who preferred to operate through trade unions. Its leadership of black intellectuals was not prepared to compromise at the 1993 negotiations, nor did AZAPO participate in the 1994 elections.
