Maduna, Penuell

1952 -

Maduna was born in Johannesburg. He studied law at the University of Zululand, where he was SASO Chairman until 1974, and eventually completed his LL.B in Zimbabwe. He was a founder member of the ANC Constitutional Committee and helped to draft the Harare Declaration. He was also an important player in the multi-party talks. In 1994 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Home Affairs; in 1996 he was moved to the position of Minister of Mineral & Energy Affairs. In Mbeki's first government he became the Minister of Justice from 1999 to 2004, at which stage he retired from active politics.
