Motlanthe, Kgalema

1949 -

Motllanthe was an active member of the ANC's political and military structures while the organisation was banned. In 1976 he was sent to Robben Island after being found guilty of terrorism. After his release from prison in 1987 he joined the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) as an education officer, eventually becoming General Secretary. Motlanthe was the first chair of the ANC Gauteng region after the unbanning of the ANC in 1990. He also serves on the ANC National Executive Committee. He is currently the Secretary General of the ANC.
