Nqakula, Charles

1942 -

Nqakula served as vice-president of the Union of Black Journalists in 1976, vice-president of the Writers' Association of SA, and vice-president of the Media Workers Association of SA in 1979. He was Publicity Secretary of the UDF from its inception in 1983. In 1988 he infiltrated the country as a commander in Operation Vula. He became General Secretary of the SACP after Hani's death in 1993, and was a member of the NEC of the ANC in 1994.

He was appointed Deputy Minister of Home Affairs from 2001 to 2002, and Minister of Safety & Security in 2002. He is the National Chairman of the SACP.
