Shope, Gertrude

Member of the ANC. From 1958 to 1966 Shope was chairperson of the Central Western Jabavu Branch of FEDSAW and in the late 1960s she became Provincial Secretary for FEDSAW. She went into exile in 1966 and became secretary to the head of the ANC Women's Section under Florence Mophosho. She became the ANC's Chief Representative in Lusaka and was a member of the NEC of the ANC in 1985. From 1991 to 1993 she was President of the ANC Women's League. In 1994 she became a MP.
