Non-European Unty Movement (NEUM)

Formed in 1943 in reaction to the Smuts government's proposal that a Coloured Affairs Department be set up. The NEUM rejected this suggestion, and like the Indian and African people strove instead for full equality with whites. It adopted a 10-point programme that included equal franchise, free and equal education, the redistribution of land and the eradication of discriminatory labour laws. Its ideological leader was an Indian doctor from Cape Town, Goolam H. Gool, who followed Trotskyite principles, advocating permanent revolution on the part of the proletariat.
