Freedom Charter

50th Anniversary of Freedom Charter

The 26th June 2005 was the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Freedom Charter at Kliptown.  On June 27th, the ANC held at 'People's Assembly' of 1300 men and women at Kliptown to commemorate the event.  In contrast, COSATU held a national strike to protest the level of unemployment. Ceremonies at Kliptown were attended by President Mbeki, cabinet ministers, parliamentarians and provincial leaders. Fenced off from the proceedings were about 500 members of the 'Kliptown Concerned Group,' demanding electricity, housing, water, and electricity. When they edged their way too close to the building where the 'Assembly' was meeting they were held back by police forming a human barrier. See 'Two 'people's assemblies': one inside, one out' Star 28 June 2005.The Freedom Charter is at [] pre transition/documents and reports/ 1985
