Sisulu, Walter

1912 - 2003

Sisulu joined the ANC in 1040. He became Treasurer of the ANCYL and a member of the Transvaal Executive. In 1949 he became Secretary General. The following year he became Joint Secretary to the Co-ordinating Committee formed by the ANC, Indian Congress and Communist Party. He was on the Planning Council for the Defiance Campaign in 1952. In 1956 he was one of the 156 accused in the Treason Trial.

In April 1963 Sisulu went underground to join MK. He was arrested at Rivonia in 1964 and sentenced to life imprisonment, but was released in 1989.

He was part of the ANC delegation which met the South African government at Groote Schuur in 1990. He was elected as ANC Deputy President and continued to play the role of an elder statesman of the ANC until his death. He retired from active politics in 1994.
