National Union Of South African Students (NUSAS)

An association of liberal student bodies, NUSAS was formed in 1924. At first it drew members from both English and Afrikaans universities but by the 1940s most of its members were English-speakers. In the 1950s when the apartheid government began to segregate tertiary educational institutions NUSAS came out strongly against this move and worked closely with black students. Despite state harassment, infiltration by state agents and the banning of eight of its leaders it continued its anti-apartheid activities. In 1991 it joined the non-racial Congress of South African Students to form the South African Students' Congress.
