Herstigte Nasionale Party (Re-formed National Party, HNP)

A far-right political party formed in 1969. It was comprised mainly of working class, lesser qualified (and therefore lower income group) Afrikaners who wanted to cling to an 'Afrikaner first' policy including statutory protection. Many of its adherents worked in the civil service, the press or were ministers in the DRC.* The HNP members were known as 'the verkramptes' (an Afrikaans word meaning 'narrow-minded'); there were also verkramptes who remained in the NP.*
